We should have had more time. We had so many things we wanted to do this summer, and we did them all. But it all felt kind of rushed.
Endless summers
As a child my summers felt endless in the best sense of the word. To me it doesn’t feel like that anymore. I’m not even sure it feels like that for kids anymore. And if that’s true, if we have lost that feeling, I think we have a huge problem.
Recently I saw this ad for a Norwegian book called “We should have had more time”. I haven’t read it yet. Haven’t had the time. But it still had me thinking.
Before having kids, I knew I wanted was to give them a lot of my childhood. A childhood where we got to explore, roam the neighborhood, build treehouses and be bored enough to watch the clouds shift form or look for shooting stars. I wanted them to know the worth of family and nature.
And I wanted to be able to give them time. Time to learn, to be curious, to develop, to fail. Time to live at a pace that didn’t foster stress or conflict.
We should have had more time
Since having children I’ve found that the most difficult is to find time for all the things I want to share with them. Or time and energy maybe, I don’t know. Mostly time I think.
There’s always more we have to do. Always a new timeline we have to follow. There’s so many hours we don’t control. And the few we do control rarely are the ones where we are energized and well rested.
This summer we had so many things we wanted to do. Cabin life, meeting family, hiking, riding mountain bikes, fishing, boat rides, beach trips, visiting the zoo, tenting. And we did it all.
But it all feels a bit rushed. We don’t get to enjoy the important part of just being a bit bored in between. And it has me thinking; we should have had more time.
